Many businessowners think their people don’t want to work hard.
They do. Almost everyone wants to get to work and do something that matters. What gets in the way is that nobody has told them what hard work looks like in your business.
Think about what happens when direction is vague. You tell someone to “take more initiative,” and they start three projects, none of which you wanted. You tell someone to “stay busy,” and they tidy the parts of the job that are easiest to see. Their effort is real. It just isn’t pointed at the work that moves the business forward.
Start with your best people. Ask yourself three questions. How does your strongest person spend an ordinary Tuesday? What do they finish before they leave? What makes you confident that if you hand them a task, it will come back the way you wanted it?
Write those answers down. That’s the standard. Most of your team has never seen it.
Here’s the harder part. Your people are watching you every day. They notice what you check, what you let slide, and what makes you frustrated. Most of those signals you never meant to send. Your team is probably reading you more closely than you’re reading them, and they’re drawing conclusions from it.
You don’t have to keep guessing what those signals mean. Give your team the direct information. Tell them what success looks like, what the daily work is, and how you’ll know it’s getting done. Then the effort you’re hoping for has somewhere to go.
If you’re not sure where to start, begin with one role. Define what great work looks like in it, and say it out loud.
